Use and maintenance

Thank you for choosing a Made in Maniago product.

To ensure maximum performance, we recommend the following clear and structured guide for the Care and Maintenance of Made in Maniago products (knives and utensils), designed to ensure performance, safety, and longevity.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE GUIDE

The knives, blades, and tools sold by Consorzio Coltellinai Maniago S.r.l. ("MKM") are made with high-quality materials and precision craftsmanship. To ensure they maintain their mechanical and aesthetic performance, it is essential to follow a few simple rules for use and maintenance.

1. Correct Use and Safety

  • Intended Use: Use each tool exclusively for the purpose for which it was designed (e.g., cutting suitable materials).

  • Avoid improper use: Never use the blade as a lever, chisel, screwdriver, or hammer. Such improper use can cause the blade and internal mechanisms to bend or break, as well as pose a danger to the user.

  • Mechanism Safety: If the product is equipped with a locking system (e.g., Liner Lock, Frame Lock, Button Lock), always make sure the blade is securely locked before use.

2. Cleaning and Washing

    • Hand Washing: Always wash the product by hand with warm water and mild, neutral soap. Use a soft sponge and avoid metal scouring pads or abrasive cleaners.

    • Dishwasher washing is not recommended: High temperatures, harsh detergents, and impact with other dishes can irreparably damage the blade's edge, surface treatments, and handle materials (wood, M390, titanium, carbon fiber, Micarta, etc.).

    • Immediate Drying: After washing, dry the product thoroughly and immediately with a soft microfiber cloth, paying particular attention to the pivot area and inside the handles.

3. Blade Maintenance and Lubrication

  • Corrosion Protection: Even high-performance stainless steels (e.g., M390, CPM-MagnaCut, Nitro-B) may show signs of oxidation if exposed to prolonged humidity, acids (e.g., lemon, tomato), or salt water.

    • After each use with acids or in marine environments, rinse and dry the blade immediately.

    • Periodically apply a thin layer of protective mineral oil or knife/gun oil to the blade.

    • Sharpening: Maintain the edge sharp using suitable tools (fine-grit whetstones or guided angle systems). A well-sharpened edge ensures a precise and safer cut.

4. Material Care

  • Natural materials (wood, horn, bone): They can be affected by changes in humidity and temperature. Periodically nourish the wood with a few drops of boiled linseed oil or wood oil.

  • Composites and Metals (Micarta, G10, Titanium, Aluminum, Carbon Fiber): Micarta may darken with hand oils; to restore its appearance, simply wash it with warm water, soap, and a soft brush.

    • Titanium and anodized aluminum can be cleaned simply with a soft, dry cloth to remove fingerprints. Please, note that anodizing is superficial and is subject to scratches and discoloration over time.

5. Lubricating Mechanisms

For folding knives or tools:

  • Apply a drop of knife lubricant to the detent balls, ball bearings, or pivot washers.

  • Periodically clean the inside of the handle of dust or debris using compressed air or a cotton swab.

6. Conservation and Storage

  • Dry environment: Store products in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place, away from direct heat or prolonged sunlight.

  • Cases and Sheaths: If storing your knife for extended periods, avoid leaving it in leather sheaths for extended periods of time: leather can retain moisture and promote metal oxidation.

  • Safety: Always store tools out of the reach of children and unauthorized persons.

7. AGE RESTRICTIONS

In compliance with current legislation on public safety and the protection of minors (including the Security Decree), the sale and transfer of knives, cutting tools, and instruments intended for harm to minors under 18 years of age is strictly prohibited.

7.1 Prohibition on Sales to Minors Under 18

  • Age Verification: Before completing the order (both in-store and on the e-commerce site), MKM reserves the right to require the buyer to verify their age by showing a valid ID or using automated online identification/age verification systems.

7.2 Carrying, Transport, and Use of Products

  • Carrying and Justified Reason: The Buyer is reminded that the purchase of cutting products for collectible, domestic, or professional use is legal for adults. However, carrying knives or tools outside one's home or its appurtenances is regulated by public safety laws and always requires a justified, concrete, contextual, and verifiable reason (e.g., hunting, fishing, outdoor activities, or demonstrable work reasons).

  • Folding Knives with Lock/Easy Opening: The unjustified carrying of products equipped with blade locking systems (e.g., liner lock, frame lock, button lock) or one-handed opening systems may be subject to penalties under the Criminal Code and specific public safety laws.

  • Parental Custody and Responsibility: Purchased products must not be left in the independent or unattended possession of minors. Any use by a minor is permitted exclusively within the home or for lawful activities (e.g., cooking or scout activities), under the direct and continuous supervision and responsibility of an adult.

8. DISPOSAL AND END-OF-LIFE MANAGEMENT

For environmental sustainability and safety reasons, when a product reaches the end of its life cycle and is no longer repairable, it must be disposed of responsibly in compliance with current waste management regulations.

8.1 Disposal Safety

To prevent injuries to waste management workers or damage to collection bags, the blade must be secured before disposing of the product.

  • Cover or wrap the sharp edges with strong tape or thick cardboard, or place the knife in its original packaging or a rigid container before disposing of it.

8.2 Separate Material Collection

Since many products are composite materials (metal, polymers, wood, carbon fiber), where possible, it is advisable to separate the components or dispose of the item according to municipal regulations:

  • Always consult the specific regulations of your municipality for the proper disposal of metal waste or small steel tools at your local recycling center.
